Or, we can call it the Ground Hog Day Blizzard. Whatever we call it, it made a mess of Michiana. Hundreds of businesses (and ALL the schools) are closed today, the roads are not clear and the Mayor of South Bend declared a snow emergency. (This is the second time in less than a month!) We are going to do the safe thing, and be closed today.

It's lake effect snow, so one minute is sunny and the next it's snowing like crazy. How do you make a weather-related decision on a day like today? The Mayor of South Bend has declares a winter weather emergency. Because of that and the forecast for ten more inches of snow today (and it's snowing right now!), we have decided to stay closed.

We apologize for the inconvenience, but want to make the correct choice for everyone's safety. Enjoy the snow!

The Crafts & Hobby Association (CHA) is holding their summer trade show July 27 - 29. I am going to this show for the first time. Because of that, we are closing the store Monday (our regularly closed day), Tuesday and Wednesday. The store will be open Thursday - Sunday with our regular hours. (But, no crop is scheduled.)

Well, we're back from our vacation and, Yes, I had a great time and am feeling well rested. :) This morning I was greeted by 8 - 10 boxes of new product. I spent most of today entering it into the computer, and I'm only about half-way. So far, I have unpacked Cosmo Cricket, TaDa, Sports Solution, Bo-Bunny Press and Cookbookin'. Still in their boxes - Creative Imagination and The Paper Company.

Last, but not least, Provo Craft has been ordered, and could arrive at any time. I will definitely let you know when the Cricut stuff arrives.

End of January

This month flew by in a blur of white! I can't believe that February starts Monday.

Our Overnight Mardi Gras crop is just a couple weeks away. If you would like to attend, please let us know soon. The crop fee includes lunch, dinner, late night pizza, snacks, drinks and a hot breakfast Sunday morning. You can go home and sleep, if you like, and spend all day Sunday cropping.

If you haven't been in recently, you haven't seen all the new glitter products from American Crafts - buttons, brads, papers and Thickers. Also, paper, brads and chipboard elements from BoBunny Press.

New custom school papers arrived today for Niles, Brandywine and Buchanan. We also have new albums for Niles and Brandywine.

Since we're closed on Mondays, now, we are thinking about switching the No Frills Crops from the last Tuesday of the month to the last Wednesday. Would this change fit into your schedule better?

We've rearranged a little - more space in the cropping area and more room for embellishments. Come by and take a look.

Snowy Saturday

It's the first Saturday in 2010 and it's been snowing since 2009! I was so glad to see the parking lot had been plowed before I arrived this morning. :)

We have a crop on the calendar for today. As of right now, we are staying on schedule. If the weather gets worse - to the point that travel is hazardous - we may rethink this.

No Frills Crop

Happy Day After Christmas!

Since we've changed our store hours (closed Mondays, now), we now have a little dilemma with the No Frills Crop. Although I check emails on Mondays, I won't get a voice mail message until I arrive at the store Tuesday. So, if you would like to attend, you must sign up on or before the Sunday before the crop.

So, in December, the crop is 12/29, and the last day to sign up is Sunday, 12/27.

Crop for a Cure Update

The third annual American Cancer Society's Coaches vs Cancer Crop for a Cure was a huge success. This year all available spots were taken before the event. (Yay!) It was announced, near the end of the day Sunday, that the amount raised was almost $5000!

Crop for a Cure is just around the corner! I've been asked to provide a list of "my" people. They are creating the seating chart, and know some of us would like to sit together. I am trying to remember, but I'm sure there are more of us than my blonde brain can recall....

The Local Economy

I have received many phone calls and emails about the news that Pages in Time in Granger is closing. They are/were big and beautiful, and we are all shocked. Times are tough here in Michiana: Elkhart is the center of the RV world, and Michigan has the highest unemployment in the country. Every day, another company closes here. Which company/industry will come in and use those empty factories? Who will replace Tyler Refrigeration or Simplicity Patterns? Is Niles typical of Small Town America? If jobs don't come here soon, Michiana will be a ghost town.

That said, I am naturally an optimist. I ALWAYS think things will get better, and many of you have heard me take the positive side of a discussion (what's the opposite of "Devil's Advocate"?).

Niles Scrapbooking, Etc. is still a "new" store, and soon it will be one of just a few open in this area. We will do everything we can to continue to be of service to our existing customers and welcome new ones. We are going to change a few things - including our store hours and the brands we carry - in order to be a better store for you. In the next few weeks, we'll send more information and ask for your opinions.

A big Thank You to our loyal customers. Without you, we wouldn't be here.

Fri. 10/2 - Friday Night Crop, starting at 6 pm (but you are welcome to arrive early). $5.
Tues. 10/6 - Day Crop, starting at 9 am. $6 fee, lunch is provided.
Sat. 10/10 - Overnight Crop. 10 am Saturday to 10 am Sunday. $40, includes lunch, dinner, late night pizza, hot breakfast, snacks and drinks!

Not Posting Very Often, Am I?

I realized that I am not posting very often on this blog. Maybe it's because of the Facebook page. If I post something to Facebook, should I always also post here? Do you check this page, but don't get the Facebook info? (Did you know that you don't have to be a member of Facebook to access the store's page?)

Kokuyo Adhesives

If you are a fan of Kokuyo brand adhesives (the Dot 'n' Roller or Tape 'n' Roller), I have bad news. Kokuyo is discontinuing their adhesives line.

Currently, we have Dot 'n' Rollers in stock, both permanent and repositionable, and refills in both. Once they are gone, we won't get anymore.

To help you find a new adhesive, we are going to start carrying a larger selection of Scrapbook Adhesives products.

Coaches vs. Cancer - Crop for a Cure 2009

"Stamp it on Your Calendar"! This year's Coaches vs. Cancer Crop For A Cure event is Sunday, November 1, 8 am - 8 pm at Waterford Estates Lodge in South Bend. Last year this event sold out so quickly that this year they expect it to sell out before invitations are mailed!

You can sign up by contacting the American Cancer Society at 866-522-2111. You must submit payment for the event ($40) within one week of making your reservation.

Stickles and Cat's Eye Inks

We received two shipments today. The box from Ranger Ink contained Stickles and gloss paper. We now have every color of Stickles in stock. It took a long time, but we finally found a supplier for gloss paper. If you've been asking for it, you know: this paper is great to use with a brayer.

The second box was from Clearsnap. We're refilling the Cat's Eye ink displays. We have new colors in both pigment and fluid chalk. If you attended National Scrapbooking Day, you received some "Smooch" pearlized accent ink. We have more in stock - in eight colors, including two we didn't have for NSD.

Day Crop Cancelled/Postponed

I am sorry to let you know that we have cancelled this week's Day Crop. If we can reschedule it for next week we will.

If you cropped here last weekend, you know about our little refrigerator problem.... On Friday, I called an appliance repair service, and they were unavailable until today. (Thursday, I put a little water in a cup in the freezer. It didn't freeze overnight, so we planned for the repair. Today when I arrived, the water is ice! Now I'm not sure if it's working, or not.) Until we know what's going on, we can't plan to buy food that needs to be refrigerated. We should have this resolved in the next few days.

Do you have an old refrigerator, in good condition, that you'd like to sell? If it turns out that the refrigerator cannot be repaired, we plan to purchase a used 'fridge....

"Garage" Sale

Our first "Garage" Sale was a big success, and everyone asked to do it again. After some discussion, we decided that "spring cleaning time" would be a great time to do it. Now that the sun is shining, have you finished your spring cleaning?

It's time to make some space in your craft room and earn a little spending money. Pack up your unwanted scrapbooking, card making, rubber stamping and other crafting supplies and bring them to our "Garage" Sale on Saturday, May 30th, 10 am - 2 pm. The fee for a table is $10, and you keep the profits!

Stamp Update

I called Inkadinkado today, because the stamps have not arrived. After a little digging, it was discovered that our order was not shipped. The customer service rep did not know why, but promised a new order would ship today. The company is based in Pennsylvania, so we should have it by the middle of next week....

Do You Like Iced Coffee?

Have you been to Rhode Island? Where you shocked by the number of Dunkin Donuts locations? It doesn't take long to figure out that Rhode Islanders love iced coffee. I never learned to like it, but I do like Dunkin Donuts' regular coffee. Too bad there isn't one a little closer to Niles....

Inkadinkado Stamps

I called Inkadinkado today, because we haven't received the April stamps. Customer service said that they had a problem with one of the stamps, so the entire shipment was delayed, but as of today everything has been shipped.

I expect to receive the Celebration stamps by Thursday, at the latest. I will let you know when they arrive.

This Week - April 6-11

Just wanted to remind you of the plan for this week. We'll be open regular hours Monday: Noon - 6 pm. Tuesday we'll open at Noon - and stay open as late as 9 pm. It's Pizza Crop Night! We have a few people signed up, so we'll stay open as long as you want to crop - until 9, that is. :) The fee for the Tuesday Night Pizza Crop is $5, and includes pizza, salad and dessert. Please let us know in advance if you'd like to come Tuesday.

We'll be closed Wednesday - Friday. We'll be open Saturday with regular hours: 10 am - 6 pm. Plus, Saturday night is the Evening Crop. It's also the day before Easter. Crop to Save the Ta Ta's

Today I sent the email about an upcoming breast cancer fundraising crop. I forgot to include the date! (Ugh!) The Crop to Save the Ta Ta's is Saturday, April 18th. Just in case you missed the email, here is the info:

Please join us for an all-day fundraising crop. Spend twelve hours cropping (9 am to 9 pm) and enjoy lunch, dinner and snacks. There will also be a raffle, and included in the items available are handknitted/felted purses. This will be a fun event, for a great cause, and all $30 of your crop fee will go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. This event is sponsored by the Ta Ta-Riffics, a Komen "Breast Cancer 3-Day" team. If you have any questions, you can contact us, or Sally Overmyer at s49120 (at) aol.com. Please sign up in advance. You can sign up with Sally, or at the store. If you would like to pay with a check, please make it payable to Breast Cancer 3-Day. The deadline to sign up is Monday, April 13th.

Tuesday Night Pizza Crop - Spring Break Edition

It's been awhile since we've done a weeknight pizza crop, and thanks to Amy & Tammy, we're going to do it again. Please join us for a crop Tuesday, April 7th. You can arrive anytime after the store opens at noon. Feel free to stay as late as 9 pm. Dinner will be pizza, salad and dessert, for only $5. Advanced sign up is required.

Also, don't forget that we'll be closed Wednesday, April 8th to Friday, April 10th. Our weekend crop will be Saturday night, April 11th. (This is the night before Easter.) If no one is signed up before Saturday, we will cancel. After the 7th, you can sign up via email or voice message.

Another One Bites the Dust

Every once in a while, I get a flyer or an email from a scrapbooking supplier. The last two I received were bad news - companies that are closing or discontinuing scrapbooking products. Yesterday, I placed my last order with Stemma. You may not recognize the name, but you'll remember the products. One of their most popular product lines was the school papers - one sheet for each year, including Kindergarten and Pre School. This last order should arrive soon, and when it does, we will have every grade in stock. And when they are gone, they are gone.

Also, Daisy D's Paper is closing. We received our last order with them at the end of February. If you are a fan of their baroque style, come take a look while you can.

Jobs with the Census Bureau

I just received this notice from the Chamber of Commerce and thought I'd pass it along.

The US Census Bureau is conducting an intense search for new employees in the Niles area this week. In these troubled economic times, the Census Bureau is one of the few organizations currently engaged in active hiring.

The Bureau will be taking job applications and giving a 30-minute qualification test at 4 P. M. on Wednesday, February 25 at the following location:

Franklin AME Church
811 Sycamore St
Niles, MI 49120

This event is hosted by the Ferry Street School Community Resource Center (Lisa Busby, Director), phone 269-687-9860.

Dozens of positions are open in the Berrien-County area for these great-paying jobs, and census work will continue through April, 2010.

Some of the positions which are currently open include: (1) Census Takers ($13-14 per hour), (2) Recruiters ($15.50 per hour), (3) Clerks ($12 per hour), and (4) Crew Leaders ($14-15 per hour).

Applicants should bring proper identification to this event: A driver's license, state ID, or school ID plus either a social-security card or birth certificate are appropriate.

A pre-test preparation class will be held Tuesday evening, February 24 from 5:30 to 7:30 P. M. at the Franklin AME Church. Participants will have the opportunity to speak to a US Census Bureau recruiter and also take a practice test to prepare for Wednesday's official testing.

Requirements for census employment are few: Basically, individuals need to be 18 years of age, and males born after December 31, 1959 should be registered with Selective Service. U. S. citizens are preferred, and veterans can receive special preferences for employment. Both part- and full-time positions are available.

Well, the sun is up and I'm back at the store. Congratulations to Tia, Paula, Angela and Tammy who made it ALL NIGHT for the overnight crop. I've been told a little napping was done by some, but everyone had a great time, and would like to do this again. When we do, we'll have to make the theme Pajama Party.

Deadlines today

Today is the last day to sign up for the Overnight Mardi Gras crop. Your $40 fee includes lunch, dinner (jumbalaya), pizza at midnight, a hot breakfast, snacks, drinks and gifts.

The last day to submit a page for the Page Layout Contest is the 15th. Because the 15th was a Sunday, you can submit your "White" page today, too.

Second Annual Mardi Gras Crop

If you haven't signed up yet for our Second Annual Mardi Gras Crop, you only have until Monday, February 16th.

This overnight crop starts at 10 am, Saturday, February 21st and continues until 10 am, Sunday, February 22nd! This is our first 24 hour crop. The crop fee is $40 and includes meals, snacks, drinks and gifts.

Remember, we are open the last Sunday of the month, and the 22nd is the last Sunday of the month, so the store will be open until 4 pm. If you would like to stay and crop past 10 am, you are welcome to do so. If you would rather get some sleep, you can go home and come back in the morning and crop until 4.

For your safety, the store will be locked overnight, please don't expect any visitors. We also ask that you make arrangements to get a ride home Sunday morning. We want to make sure that everyone to makes it home safely.

Pebbles, Inc.

We received a shipment from Pebbles. Included are the Earth Tone and Basic Brights chalk sets. Their newest chalks - Metallic - will arrive soon. We also have their new sticker line. This inexpensive stickers cover a variety of themes - everything from camping to skateboarding to potty training.

Their coolest new item is "chips." Chips are a pack of chipboard accents in a single color scheme. Some of the chips include glitter. They come in twelve colors and you get a lot for your money. Come in and see them!

Page Layout Contest

It's the end of January, and time to announce the theme for the February contest. We are going to try something a little different. This month's theme is White. Here is your chance to be creative! White could be the color of your layout, or part of the title. The photos could be a wedding, or snow, or laundry on the line, or an old church, or....

Please submit your pages between February 1st and 14th. All entries will be posted on the 15th. You can vote every time you come to the store, until the end of the month. The winner get a NSE gift certificate. Remember, if we have ten or more submissions, an additional gift certificate will be awarded to a random submission.

We've made it through the holidays, and now we have a little free time. But, the holiday bills are still coming in.... In order to give you the chance to work on your scrapbook, but keep your spending down, we are trying something new: the "Bare Bones" Crop.

Saturday, January 10th, 10 am - 11 pm: pizza for lunch, pasta for dinner, brownies for dessert, drinks - no gifts, no snacks, etc. for ONLY $10!

Changing Store Hours

We have been thinking about changing our store hours. We've been around long enough now to see the times and days that people do most of their shopping. We will probably change our Friday hours to match the other days of the week (noon - 6 pm), except on crop nights.

We are also thinking about adding Sunday hours once a month. Maybe 12 - 4. Also, would you be interested in Sunday afternoon crops? Before we make any decisions, we'd like your input.

Okay, this is CRAZY. QuicKutz has dramatically reduced the price of the Silhouette Digital Craft Cutter. I can't tell you the price, but it's AMAZINGLY low! (Well, I'll tell you that it's less than HALF the old price!) I hope to have them in the store in about a week. If you have thinking about getting this machine, now is the time. And, just in time for the Holidays!

Thanksgiving Weekend Crop?

We don't have a crop on the calendar for Thanksgiving weekend. Most people are out of town, or are hosting guests, and use the extra long weekend to relax. I know for some of you, though, working on your scrapbook without the distractions of home, counts as relaxing. Also, if you have family in town, maybe you would like to bring your Mom or Sister or Cousin and dedicate a little girl time? So, what shall we do?

What do you think about a crop on Saturday, November 29th? We could start a little early, and end a little early. We can order pizza at dinner time - similar to the weeknight pizza crops.

Closing Early, Friday, November 14th

"Garage" Sale Postponed

Several people have called and/or emailed about the garage sale scheduled for Saturday. Unfortunately, so far no one has signed up. I recently found out that the St. Mary's Arts & Craft Bazaar and the Niles Senior Center Craft Sale are being held on the same day. So, we're going to postpone the garage sale so that we can find a date that is less busy.

We are thinking of December 6th. Do you know of anything else that is planned for that morning? If you have any opinions or suggestions, please let me know.

Black Magic & Chocolate Box

Okay, so this sounds like a Halloween post, but it's not! We finally received the back-ordered items from Core'dinations. Each sheet of Black Magic core paper is black on the outside with a bright color core. The Chocolate Box paper is brown on the outside. Each pack has twenty sheets, each a different color inside. Unfortunately, these papers are not available individually.

And, since it's October 31st, let me take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and Happy Halloween!

"Garage" Sale

Halloween

If you have looked at a calendar, you know Halloween is a Friday night this year. Usually, we are open until 8 pm on Fridays and have a crop every other Friday evening. Because of Trick or Treat, we are going to close at 5:00 pm on Friday, October 31st. We are doing this for several reasons:
1) We'd like to be home to participate in our neighborhood's Trick or Treat,
2) There we be A LOT of kids walking at night, and fewer cars on the road is better, and
3) Everyone is going to be at home handing out candy, not out shopping!

We have moved the crop that week to Saturday night.

"Garage" Sale?

We are thinking about hosting a "garage" sale on a Saturday in the near future. For a small fee, you will be able to display and sell your old supplies. I am so excited! Diane H. just came in and showed me some ADORABLE paper crafts that she's made - cards and purses and gift items. I think they are so neat that we've decided to show you how to make them. Yup - we're doing a new class.
